Purpose of the IP Register

The Intellectual Property (IP) Register is a central repository of information relating to IP that is or has been within the Department's control. This includes information about:

  • IP created and owned by the Department
  • IP owned by third parties and ‘licensed in’ by the Department.

The IP Register will assist the Departmental staff to:

  • minimise the risk of infringing third party intellectual property rights
  • minimise licensing costs
  • reduce the amount of copyright royalties paid by the Department
  • enable the Department to meet statutory reporting requirements relating to intangible assets.

Development of an Online IP Register

The development of an online IP Register is one of the Department’s flagship Knowledge Management projects.

Further information about the IP Register and its contribution to Knowledge Management in the Department can be obtained from your divisional or Office Knowledge Management Champions (intranet link).

The IP Register is being rolled out in three Phases:

Phase 1 - A 'Smart' spreadsheet solution rolled out in the Department (excluding schools) - July 2007.

See Interim IP Register Spreadsheet (Excel - 539Kb).

Phase 2 - An Online IP Register will be rolled out to the whole Department during the first quarter of 2008.

Phase 3 - The Online IP Register will be ‘interfaced’ with various related business systems and processes, including the Department’s ARIBA Purchasing System, Project Management Framework, ICT Governance Framework and System, Knowledgebank, Ultranet and others.

It is envisaged that computer-based training in the use of the Online IP Register will be provided at the time of the Online IP Register rollout in 2008.
