Support for Schools

In July 2001 the Department established a Tax Compliance Unit to advise on, assist with, the implementation of the FBT, GST and other tax legislation across the education portfolio.

The objectives of the Tax Compliance Unit are to:

  • ensure the Department and its entities comply with all tax related statutory requirements in accordance with the Tax Compliance Framework
  • identify all issues relating to the implementation of the GST which have an impact on the Department and education providers and ensure these issues are appropriately addressed and resolved in a timely manner to enable the Department to satisfy the statutory requirements
  • ensure all stakeholders are consulted where necessary and are fully aware of all the FBT, GST and other taxation implications and requirements
  • ensure all the processes and systems within the Department are changed where necessary to facilitate the introduction of GST
  • minimise duplication of effort and waste of resources across the Department, schools, and TAFE and community education providers by either drawing on the expertise of consultants engaged by the Department of Treasury and Finance or engaging consultants to undertake generic work.

IFX (information exchange)

During 2002 the Tax Compliance Unit engaged the services of IFX Information Exchange as an external consultant to the Department. Schools or regions can pose complex questions to the IFX advisory team. E-mail your question to your regional contact and an answer will be sent to you within 24 hours.

IFX cannot answer questions on CASES GST Classification and data entry.

Tax brief

The Tax Compliance Unit will compile some "hot" issue documentation concerning FBT and GST on a monthly basis through Network Leaders to distribute to schools through the SSO network.

Sharing of knowledge

The Tax Compliance Unit periodically will visit schools across the state to share knowledge on FBT and GST with bursars and business managers in each school. The visits would also incorporate a "sharing of knowledge" with any new bursar or business manager appointed to a school.

Regional Business Managers Network and Leaders

"Networks” have been established for schools in all regions across the state.

Network leaders organise discussion groups and training, chat lines, disseminate information and advice to network schools from the centre and regions on GST and other school administration and accounting matters.

If your school does not belong to a network, we highly recommend that you join one to provide support, advice and peer on administrative, taxation and other issues.

For more information, see this list of Networks and their contacts (Excel - 390Kb).
