Online Privacy

Lack of trust and inadequate privacy protection has been identified as one of the many reasons why people choose not to use online services. For this reason, the Victorian Government passed the Information Privacy Act. This Act provides privacy standards when operating in a physical world and online environment.

The posting and sharing information online or in any other way requires consent. This consent must be fully informed, freely given, current and specific in how the information will be presented and who it will be presented to. Schools will require signed authority for any work, images or information posted online.

Other areas which schools should consider in privacy requests from parents are any online spaces which collect information from users. For example, students may sign up to blog or wiki spaces (where appropriate) however parents/caregivers should be informed of the specific information collected to do this.
