Whole School Planning

The whole school community needs to be involved in forming policies and processes related to the safe and appropriate use of the internet and other technologies by students and staff.

These e-Safety policies and processes best exist within wider school safety and well being policies. However schools need to be very explicit about expected online behaviours as mobile and online technologies are now very much part of learning in the 21st century.

School communities firstly need to identify and understand the responsibilities of all the different groups involved in internet safety education. Principals, teachers from all curriculum areas, technical staff, parents and students all have a role to play.

Schools then need to form policies that:

  • address student and staff codes of conduct
  • consider both online and mobile technologies provided by the school and those brought on to school grounds
  • recognise the educational benefits of technologies as well as address the possible risks associated with them
  • allow for the emergence of new technologies.
