What kinds of photos do you put on your social networking sites? Are you happy for anyone to see those images? In reality, once your image has been posted on the internet, potentially anyone can see it and share it with others. What does this mean for you? How do you recommend others protect their image? Write, perform and film your own scenario. How will you make people think about the issues?

How can online issues affect friendships?

Broken Friendship
(http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=3791&title=Broken_Friendship)

Have you ever shared your password with someone else? What could the implications be? How secure are your passwords? Could they be easily guessed? Brainstorm some of the things someone could do if they had your email password. Originally from: Netsmartz (http://www.netsmartz.org). Site includes activities based on the video.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying – Talent show (http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=1761&title=Cyberbullying___Talent_Show) Ad Council

People can remain anonymous in online environments. This can lead to all sorts of problems. One of these is obviously cyberbullying. People sometimes feel confident to say things online that they would never say in person. Comments can be impulsively published for the world to see. Remember that whatever you do online can usually be traced back to your computer.

Cyberbullying – Let’s fight it together
(http://www.digizen.org/cyberbullying/fullFilm.aspx)

What are the effects of cyberbullying? What do you think other characters in this story would say about the situation? Write a script (and perform it!) showing the perspective of Kim (the bully), the teacher, mother and Rob (bystander). Then watch short interviews about each character in the film.

Copyright and piracy

Australian Music In Tune (http://www.in-tune.com.au) 'The internet has been a Godsend and a nightmare for the industry'. Australian songwriters and musicians speak out on the realities of life as an artist.

All Right to Copy (http://www.smartcopying.edu.au/scw/all-right-to-copy/index.htm) It is becoming easier to source, download and upload film, text, images and music. This resource offers a guide to students and teachers as to what they can and cannot do when it comes to using the work of others.

Online relationships

Think U Know Think Again
(http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=15973&title=Think_U_Know_think_again)

Dangers to teenage girls in online environments are more frequently discussed, however the same issues can occur for teenage boys. How would you react in this situation? How could have the boy prevented the situation? How would you help a friend going through something similar?

Claire Thought
(http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=15972&title=Claire_Thought)

What questions DON’T you know the answers to when you’re talking to someone online? As a group, brainstorm a list of questions you can’t really know the answer to. Under what circumstances might you arrange to meet someone you’d met online? How could you be sure of their true identity?

You could create a story board of the following story. At what points did Claire make important decisions? Identify these key points. What could have she done differently at these moments? How might this have changed the story?

* This story is particularly confronting.

Amy’s Choice
(http://www.netsmartz.org/stories/amy.htm)

What could prompt a teenage girl to run away with someone she’d met online? What would it take for you to talk to an adult about a situation you felt uncomfortable with, either for yourself or a friend? Site includes activities based on the video.

Online Sexual Exploitation – Exchange
(http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1294704/online_sexual_exploitation_exchange/) Ad Council

Teenagers and online predators view internet exchanges very differently. This video contrasts these views in a powerful way. Can you think of other exchanges that might be misinterpreted? Follow a similar format and create a short role play highlighting how this can happen.

Online privacy

Do you have a Facebook?

Are you aware of how much of your privacy you’re giving away? Or of how your details might be used? Research the privacy guidelines for other social networking sites. How do they compare?
