Curriculum Planning

The 21st Century Learner uses the internet to build knowledge. The classroom teacher needs to plan their use of the internet incorporating rich learning tasks and essential questions to support students to build new knowledge. Students should have opportunities to communicate, collaborate, create and visualise their thinking in purposeful ways. Use of the internet should not be regarded as an add-on or only be used for 'busy work'.

The exploration of ethical and safe use of the internet should prepare students for their use of the internet beyond the classroom. Specific lessons highlighting safety and ethics may sometimes be required, along with discussions about issues which have affected students. Cybersafety should be considered at all times.

Victorian Essential Learning Standards

The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) (http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au) curriculum approach addresses:

  • the economic and social changes associated with the development of our global, knowledge-based world and their implications for schools
  • the growing evidence base about how people learn and its implications for teaching.

It focuses on:

  • a student-centred approach
  • developing the learner who can apply their knowledge beyond the classroom to new and different situations
  • autonomous learners.

References to the development of cybersafe and ethical behaviours are identified throughout the VELS:
