Linking LOTE and Civics and Citizenship

Dimensions...
Civic knowledge and understanding

National symbols and emblems of life; Australian government (comparison with other nations); democracy in Australia; multiculturalism and immigration

Community engagement

Engagement with community groups; Viewpoints and action on political, social and environmental issues

The Civics and Citizenship domain provides students with knowledge, skills and opportunities to understand and practise what it means to be a citizen in a democracy and a participant in community life.

Teachers can design LOTE units with a focus on topics such as comparisons between the governance systems and civic values of two countries; multiculturalism and the nature of Australian society; immigration to Australia; human rights; equality and social justice; environmental sustainability; interaction with the local LOTE-speaking community.

In this way, students can see links between the intercultural knowledge learned in LOTE class, and the knowledge they explore in the Civics and Citizenship domain. Units which include engagement with the local LOTE-speaking community can make language study more real and relevant for many students.
