Introduction
Donating to your favourite charity is simpler and more effective through the Workplace Giving Program where you can make regular donations through automatic deductions from your pre-tax salary. Workplace Giving is optional - you can change or stop your donations at any time.
The Department has contracted the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) to administer the Workplace Giving Program. CAF is an international not-for-profit organisation that has a strong reputation worldwide. CAF offers you the opportunity to make a significant and lasting impact on the work of not-for-profit organisations.
You can find out more about CAF Australia by visiting their website at http://www.cafaustralia.org.au/
Which Charities can I donate to through this facility?
Select a charity from the CAF List of Charities (refer link under Other Resources below) which spans a wide range of major charities & causes. If your preferred charity(ies) is not shown on the CAF list, you can still nominate to donate to them, however, the organisation must be a registered charity recognised by the Australian Tax Office to receive tax effective gifts. Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) will carry out all checks to ensure this is the case. Should you have any queries CAF can be contacted on 1300 653 567.
How can I be sure that my donation reaches my nominated not-for-profit organisation?
CAF is a highly credible, international not-for-profit organisation with a mission to increase the flow of funds to the not-for-profit sector. CAF makes grants to charities taking into consideration the request of the donor.
After your donation has been processed, you will receive an initial welcome / confirmation letter from CAF which will outline your nominated charities and donation amounts.
If you have not opted to remain anonymous then your contact details will be passed on to your referred charity, along with the monthly grant of funds.
Should your nominated organisation be unsuitable to receive the funds, CAF will contact you direct to discuss this matter.
Will all the money I donate through this facility reach the nominated organisation?
CAF will deduct a small fee to contribute to the cost of administration. When compared to other programs, CAF offers complete donor preference and has low administration fees compared with other methods of giving. Workplace Giving is the most cost-effective method of supporting your preferred causes.
How will donating using this facility affect my tax?
Deductions using this facility will be made from your pre-tax salary. This means you will get the tax deduction benefit upfront, each pay, as each deduction is made rather than when submitting your tax return.
At the end of each financial year, the total amount of your annual donation will be shown in your PAYG Summary or a statement will be issued to you.
