Disability Standards for Education 2005

The Disability Standards for Education 2005 came into effect on 18 August, 2005.

The Disability Standards for Education 2005 clarify and make more explicit the obligations on schools and the rights of students under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DD Act).

The Standards cover enrolment, participation, curriculum development, student support services and harassment and victimisation.

All schools are currently required to comply with the Standards introduced by the Federal Government in August 2005.

The Standards are accompanied by Guidance Notes. The Guidance Notes are written in plain English and are intended to provide additional explanation to assist users of the Standards in interpreting and complying with the Standards.

Education Forum

The Department of Education delivered a highly successful Disability Standards for Education professional learning forum on 16 May 2006. The forum was attended by a range of representatives from all education sectors including Department central and regional teams. In all 80 participants heard the Commissioner for Human Rights and Commissioner Responsible for Disability Discrimination Graeme Innes, provide background to the development of the Education Standards.

The purpose of the professional learning forum was to skill a range of facilitators who will communicate the responsibilities and obligations of schools for all students with disabilities. Schools can learn more about their responsibilities by looking at the information provided and/or contacting their regional office.
