Date Published: 12 July 2000
The Victorian Secondary School Nursing Program is an exciting new Government initiative which was launched by the Hon John Thwaites, Minister for Health in conjunction with the Hon Mary Delahunty, Minister for Education on 12 July 2000. The launch which took place at South Oakleigh Secondary College, also heralded the commencement of a consultation phase.
The aim of the consultation is to gain broad community input into the refinement of a model of service delivery for the program. To support this process, a paper has been written which provides a background to the program, including Government policy objectives, implementation progress to date and current research regarding best practice in primary and secondary prevention in adolescent health. The paper also describes issues to be considered as part of the consultation. Feedback on the issues will be sought through a variety of forums including written submissions and these are detailed in the paper.

Date Published: 12 August 2002
The purpose of the Secondary School Nursing (SSN) program guidelines is multifaceted. The guidelines aim to achieve a shared understanding amongst school staff, students, caregivers or guardians and other stakeholders of the role of the nurse, to provide a clear framework to support nurses in the implementation of their role and to articulate clearly the structure and direction of the secondary school nursing program.
The guidelines also aim to provide a consistent approach to the practice of nurses in schools. It is expected that the guidelines will provide a basis for the development of local decisions that directly reflect the policies, procedures and needs of individual schools.
