Parenting services

Regional Parenting Services

Regional Parenting Services provide group education, information and intervention programs to parents. Regional Parenting Services provide families with the opportunity to participate in local, effective and relevant parenting programs that focus on key transition points in the lives of children and families. Services are targeted to neighbourhoods of social and economic disadvantage. One service is located in each of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development regions across the State.

Parenting Research Centre (formely Victorian Parenting Centre)

The Victorian Parenting Centre is a statewide service that undertakes parenting research and evaluates parenting programs. It provides evidence based training and consultancy services to professionals in relation to parenting issues and how to apply the results of its research. The Victorian Parenting Centre also develops and disseminates a range of resource materials including those developed as part of the Positive Parenting Program.

Parentline

Parentline is a statewide telephone service providing information, advice, referral and counselling on parenting issues. The focus of Parentline is prevention and early intervention rather than crisis support.

Parentline operates between 8am and midnight on weekdays and between 10am and 10pm on weekends. For deaf, hearing or speech impaired call TTY 13 63 88 for the cost of a local call.

Early Parenting Centres

Early Parenting Centres provide services and support to assist parents experiencing acute early parenting difficulties to care for their children by increasing parents' knowledge, skills and confidence through the provision of consultation, counselling, skill development and education services. Services provided by Early Parenting Centres include day stay programs (on or off campus), a residential program, in-home programs and group education or seminars. The target group for Early Parenting Centres is families with children aged birth to three years experiencing acute early parenting difficulties.

Family Intervention Services

Family Intervention Services aim to increase the effectiveness of parenting behaviours and increase social competencies in children through the provision of consultation, counselling, skill development and education services as part of the following service components: individual and group interventions. Family Intervention Services are preventative intervention services which aim to reduce parental depression, anxiety and stress and to reduce conflict in relationships between parents. The target group for Family Intervention Services is families of children under 10 years who are experiencing significant parenting difficulties and/or whose children exhibit disruptive, defiant or aggressive behaviour.

Strengthening Parent Support Program

    Strengthening Parent Support Program offers support to families in establishing formal and informal parent support groups. These groups are seen as an important adjunct to the service system by offering mutual support for families of children with disabilities and developmental delay through the sharing of common experiences, concerns and aspirations.

    Family services

      Family Services provides a range of activities that may include the provision of outreach, assessment, case management, counselling, casework, in-home support, group work, brokerage, as well as other support and information activities. In most cases an initial assessment will be conducted with the family to determine the level, priority and type of service required. Where there are risk factors, early intervention services will be provided. Where there are complex needs, longer term and episodic individual support for families will be provided. Family Services uses a child-youth centred, family-focussed approach.

      Family Services are targeted to families with children aged 0 to 18 years who require assistance to provide a safe, nurturing and stable environment for their children. Priority access will be given to families where risk indicators are present. Risk indicators may include the presence of mental illness, disability, substance abuse, family violence, social and economic disadvantage, involvement with Child Protection or the justice system, risk of family breakdown or teenage parents.
