October - The Parents Babies and Children’s Expo, held annually at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 17th to 19th October 2003, attracted huge numbers of parent’s and expectant parents. The Department of Human Services this year hosted a stand focused on the Early Years and included Best Start, Parentline and Early Years Literacy and Numeracy.
The level of interest from the general public who sought information from the DHS stand regarding the care of babies and young children was gratifying to staff who gave up their week-end to ‘man’ the stand. Many were interested the colourful posters displayed the promoted the ‘prime time’ for health and learning.
Early Years policy is a major focus for the Government, to improve the health and literacy standards of children from birth though to transition to school, and it presented a valuable opportunity to reach the public to promote these policies.
It was important for the public to understand the Government provides essential universal services to all children and their families. The promotion of the universal services was an important contrast to the many boutique products available at such an Expo.
