Checkpoint 3.2 - Core

Identical link text is not used for different targets on the same page

WCAG 1.0 Priority 2

WCAG Guideline 13. Provide clear navigation mechanisms.

Links that have identical text but lead to different pages might be perfectly accessible to sighted users due to distinct visual clues presented on a page. However, visually impaired users would become confused and disoriented listening to a list of links aggregated by screen readers or Braille output.

The same visual clues helping sighted users to differentiate between the different links with identical wording might not be accessible to those with screen magnifying software as only a small portion of the screen is visible to them.

Requirement

Do not use identical link text for different targets on the same page.

Checking Tool

  • Internet Explorer - AIS Toolbar: Doc Info > List Links [New Window]
Analyse links to ensure no identical link text is used for different targets on the same page
