Checkpoint 1.5 - Flash

All buttons are accessible to screen readers

WCAG 1.0 Priority 2

WCAG Guideline 6. Ensure that pages featuring new technologies transform gracefully.

Screen readers recognise Flash buttons by default and will announce the word "button" at either the beginning or the end of the actual button text. It is important to place text inside a button symbol in order for the screen reader to access the button. If a button symbol does not contain text, provide a text equivalent via the Flash Accessibility Panel.

Requirement

Make all buttons accessible by either placing text directly into the button symbol or by providing button text equivalent in the Flash Accessibility Panel.

Recommendation

If the button contains animation it is best to deselect the Make Child Objects Accessible option in the Accessibility Panel and provide a text equivalent for the entire button instead.

Checking Tool

Use Flash Player 6 or newer to browse Flash content and a screen seader to test its accessibility.
