Selection Procedures

Principals of government schools in Victoria are responsible for the staffing of their school and ensuring that an appropriate merit-based selection process is implemented in filling vacancies.

Selection of staff for advertised positions is determined solely on the basis of merit assessed in relation to the selection criteria, which specify the relevant skills, personal qualities and abilities required for the efficient performance of the position.

The establishment of a selection panel is required for the selection of applicants for all teaching positions of more than six months and all assistant principal positions. Excess staff and staff eligible for compassionate transfer are considered ahead of other applicants on the basis of their suitability for redeployment to the vacant position.

When making selection decisions, principals and selection panels must also comply with equal employment opportunity and privacy legislation.
