Casual Relief Teaching

Valuable experience can be gained in casual or short-term teaching positions. This type of employment may suit your lifestyle needs and allows you to ascertain if teaching at a particular school or location suits you.

Casual relief teachers (CRT) are casual employees engaged by Victorian government school councils for periods of up to 30 consecutive working days to replace teachers for a range of reasons, including:

  • to replace a staff member on leave
  • to replace a staff member undertaking other duties or professional development
  • to undertake a task or activity that requires a qualified teacher.

You cannot be employed as a CRT until the school principal is satisfied that you are suitably qualified, hold current teacher registration and have satisfied other Department pre employment requirements.

All teachers, including those employed in a casual capacity, must have at least four years of tertiary education including an approved course of teacher training. If an appropriately qualified teacher is not available, a teacher with less than four years of tertiary study, including a completed approved course of teacher training, may be employed. In these instances the principal would be required to liaise with the Victorian Institute of Teaching regarding the granting of permission to teach.

Because of the nature of the CRT employment it is important to make contacts and become known in the area where you are seeking employment.

  • Lodge your details in the job seekers' register (talent pool) on Recruitment Online. Your resume can then be accessed by principals of Victorian government schools searching for staff.
  • Make an appointment to visit and discuss employment opportunities with the principals of schools that interest you and pursue opportunities in the geographical area of your interest.

Discuss local CRT practices with regional contacts with the view to determining if private providers are commonly used by schools in the area and consider registering your interest. See: Victorian regional offices
