Applying for Positions

Find vacancies using Recruitment Online

Vacancies in Victorian government schools are open to all qualified applicants and are advertised as they arise through Recruitment Online.

If you are a current-year or recent teacher graduate you should also find on Recruitment Online vacancies under the Teacher Graduate Recruitment Program and the Teaching Scholarships

Tips when applying

Be specific in your application:

  • When responding to any advertised position it is strongly recommended that you submit a specific response to the key selection criteria for the position to enhance the quality of your application.
  • Schools Online provides details for particular schools and geographical areas. See: Schools Online
  • You can contact principals of the schools in which you are interested and discuss possible employment opportunities, including shorter-term and casual positions.

Remember if you limit your availability, you will have to compete for limited vacancies. If you are reasonably flexible in your location preferences and if you are able to consider some rural locations, you will increase your chances of securing a position in a Victorian government school. If you are prepared to seek a position in country schools, or in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, these communities can often assist in finding accommodation and getting you settled. All offer great lifestyles and have relatively easy access to Melbourne.

Pre-employment requirements

All prospective staff must meet Department pre-employment requirements before commencing employment. For more information, see: Pre-Employment Requirements

Registration

Before commencing employment all teachers must be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching

If your qualifications were gained interstate or overseas an assessment of your qualifications forms part of the registration application process.

Interstate and overseas teachers

Many qualifications gained from interstate or overseas tertiary institutions are recognised for teaching in Victoria. If you have interstate or overseas qualifications, the Victorian Institute of Teaching must assess that you are appropriately qualified and registered.

Returning teachers

Qualified teachers returning to the profession have the opportunity to catch up on the latest developments in education by attending the Department's refresher courses. The Refresher Courses for Teachers Returning to Government Schools initiative builds the skills of the teaching workforce by assisting returning teachers to adopt sound practices already available in government schools, and improve student learning.

See: Refresher Courses

Recognition of experience

Any approved previous teaching experience is taken into account in determining your commencing salary as a teacher. See: Salaries

'Approved teaching experience' means completed years of full-time equivalent teaching experience approved by the Secretary of the Department and gained subsequent to the completion of an approved course of teacher education. All teaching experience, other that casual relief teaching prior to 1 January 2005, undertaken in a P-12 school setting or equivalent counts as approved teaching experience for commencing salary purposes.

If you wish to have teaching experience with an employer other than the Department recognised for salary purposes, you must supply a statement of service from your employer.
