The Student Teacher Practicum Scheme provides financial incentives to student teachers to undertake practicum placements in Victorian government rural and outer-metropolitan schools.
Under the scheme, if you meet the eligibility criteria, you can claim an allowance for placements of 15 days or longer.
1. Living away from home allowance -
cumulative total of 15 days at the same school (eg: block of three weeks or a block of two weeks followed by a further block of one week) – allowance of $1,000; or
cumulative total of 25 days or more at the same school (eg: 2 days per week over 10 weeks followed by 5 individual days) – allowance of $1,600.
2. Living away from home bonus allowance -
an extra one-off payment of $600 Living Away From Home Bonus Allowance will be available to some applicants who have previously received the Living Away From Home Allowance, in the following circumstances:
(a) the applicant is undertaking a second placement at a designated hard to staff or rural school; and
(b) the applicant falls into one of the following categories:
• he/she is a teacher undertaking special education qualifications;
• he/she is a teacher who is retraining under the Rural Retraining Scheme; or
• he/she is undertaking an internship or induction during the Masters component of a Master of Teaching course.
3. Travel allowance -
a payment of $300 is available to assist you, if you are an eligible student, to meet commuting costs if you are required to undertake significant travel on a daily basis from your current place of residence to the designated practicum host school. For the purpose of this scheme significant travel is considered to be instances where daily one-way travel is equal to or greater than 50 minutes.
Student teachers independently arrange their placement directly with their university coordinator. Allowances are available for eligible students with placements that satisfy the eligibility criteria. However, once funding has been exhausted, no further applications are considered, and all unsuccessful applicants are notified in writing.
The payment of an allowance under the scheme is not automatic. If you are interested you should ensure that you understand the procedures, eligibility criteria and related priorities. All applications are assessed for their eligibility by the HR Services Branch and you will be advised by mail of the outcome of your application.
