Maths and Science Graduate Scholarship - Are you eligible?

You are eligible to apply for the Maths and Science Graduate Scholarships if you are a graduate or final-year student and you meet the requirements for graduate teaching course entry into a commonwealth supported place with at least one method area in the mathematics or science domains. 

You must have an approved university degree that includes study as prescribed in the Victorian Institute of Teaching's Specialist Area Guidelines. The specialist area guidelines prescribe the following minimum levels of study for subjects in the Mathematics and Science domains.

Mathematics

  • Sub-major in Mathematics. Statistics is accepted as Mathematics provided it is taken within a Mathematics Department.

Science

  • General Science - Sub-major in General Science, which includes studies in at least two units of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science/Geology, and Physics, or a sub-major in one of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science/Geology and Physics together with a part study with the weighting of at least one-quarter of a year of full-time study in the course from which it is derived in another of these areas of study.
  • Specialist - Sub-major study in the specialist science area. The following details specialist science subjects commonly taught in Victorian government schools, together with examples of study areas applicable in each case:
    • Biology—includes physiology, microbiology, botany, zoology.
    • Chemistry—includes Biochemistry.
    • Environmental Science—includes areas such as Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geography, Earth Science.
    • Geology—includes Earth Science.
    • Psychology—includes Behavioural Science.
    • Physics—includes Electronics.

Priority is given to those graduates applying for method studies in the area of Mathematics, General Science or Physics. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates will be given priority consideration and are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications for the 2010 scholarship intake close on 5 October 2009. If you wish to apply, you are also required to apply for course entry. Applications for graduate course entry are made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) or for a small number of courses directly to the university. You must meet university and VTAC application requirements and timelines. Scholarships awarded under the Maths and Science Graduate Scholarship are dependent on selection to an approved graduate entry teaching course with an appropriate method study.
