Victorian government schools and early childhood centres have a wide range of teaching and promotion opportunities to offer to newly qualified and experienced teachers who are flexible and motivated. With access to flexible work options teachers can design a career to suit their needs and interests.
Over 38,800 teachers and 2800 principals and assistant principals are employed in government schools in Victoria. This means there will always be people retiring, resigning, going on leave - and they need to be replaced. It also means that there are opportunities for work all over Victoria.
Increased student enrolments also generate employment opportunities for new teachers that are additional to those required to cover normal attrition and replacement.
Victorian government schools particularly need qualified teachers in a range of curriculum areas who are willing to teach where vacancies exist. Over the next few years, it is projected that there will be an annual requirement for an average of approximately 2100 new teachers.
While secondary teachers are needed over the whole range of school subjects, the areas that have the greatest opportunities for employment include Mathematics, General Science, Physics, Languages other than English (especially Indonesian), Italian, French, Japanese and German, Information Technology and technology subjects.
There is also a particular need for teachers in rural and regional areas. Information on the school regions can be found at About the Department.
Special education teachers and primary teachers with qualifications in Languages other than English, Physical Education or Music are much in demand.
Early childhood teachers are in particular demand in rural areas, children’s hubs, special education, and local government planning and coordinating.
The job prospects are therefore very good and will continue to expand. This is good news for the increasing number of students enrolled in teacher education programs.
