All teachers are able to access paid or unpaid leave for a variety of purposes.
As a teacher you are entitled to 20 days recreation leave per year (taken during school holidays). In general however, you are not required to attend school during school vacation periods although you may use this time to undertake professional development or some preparatory work.
Entitlement to other periods of paid leave include long service leave, paid sick leave (accumulating if unused), paid maternity leave, and unpaid family leave, which may be taken by either parent. Paid partner leave is also available in conjunction with the acceptance of responsibility for, or birth of a child.
There is also a system of sabbatical leave - a professional renewal incentive scheme designed to provide employees with a flexible arrangement where they can fund a period of sabbatical leave.
