Beyond School 16+

There are four main types of education providers offering study and training to adults or students who have left school. These education providers offer opportunities to study by attending classes on their campus, studying online or studying off-campus.

The main types of education providers are:

  • TAFE institutes – as a TAFE student, you can learn specific, practical skills that will get you ready to work. You can complete your course at a TAFE institution or via a private training provider. For more information, see: Skills Victoria’s TAFE Students
  • Registered training organisations (RTOs) – in Victoria, registered training organisations provide vocational education and training (VET). For more information, see: Skills Victoria’s Training Organisations
  • Studying at a university – as a university student, you can gain a professional qualification with a theoretical focus. Some courses provide specific work skills, (e.g. accounting or medicine) while others provide more 'generalist' skills. You can complete your course at a public university or via a private higher education provider. For more information, see: Skills Victoria’s University Students
  • Learning as an adult – if you are over 18 and have been out of full-time education for at least one year, TAFE classifies you as a ‘mature-age student.
For more information, see: Skills Victoria's Adult Learners.
