Choosing and Enrolling in School
Children usually attend the school closest to where they live. Parents or carers can select another school if there are places available. Make contact early, to allow time to visit a number of schools. Principals or other staff members can provide tours, classroom visits and information.
To make your visits more focused, consider the following questions:
- What are your child’s needs and interests? Will the school be able to cater for them?
- Is the school reasonably close to home, work and carers?
- What facilities does the school offer, and are you comfortable with the ‘feel’ of it?
- Are staff supportive and welcoming?
- What curriculum programs are offered?
- What are the school policies on homework and discipline?
- What other services, such as after-school care programs, does the school offer?
Most schools conduct a starting school program for students entering Prep. Students are usually invited to visit their new school in the year before starting, so they can get to know the new environment. Some schools set up buddy systems with older children to ensure that Prep children have a stimulating and welcoming experience from the beginning.
There are other types of schools available, including:
- Special Schools
- English Language schools and centres
- Distance Education (http://www.distance.vic.edu.au/index.html)
- Selective Entry Schools (schools catering for high achieving, academically gifted students in Years 9-12)
- Home Schooling.
