Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools
Reading, writing and mathematics will always be important in education, and technology can be a vital tool to help students better interact with these fundamental skills. Knowing how to use technology also forms part of the skill set students need for life in the 21st century.
Victorian government schools provide an innovative learning environment so that all students have great opportunities to succeed. Victorian schools are leading the way when it comes to technology. Every school in Victoria will soon be upgraded to high capacity broadband internet through the Victorian Government's VicSmart initiative.
This means that your child will have quick access to the best learning materials and also be able to share their knowledge online.
You may feel that this is a subject area where your child knows more than you. If so, consider contacting your local community centre and asking if they offer computer courses you could benefit from as a parent.
Information and Communications Technology, or ICT (you probably know this as IT), is the computer-related hardware and software that enables information to be digitally processed, stored and communicated. Schools across Victoria are already integrating ICT into their curriculum in ways that allow them to increase student computer literacy, share knowledge and information creatively, and in some cases overcome barriers like isolation or disability.
In today's technology-rich environment, integrating ICT into teaching and learning will better equip young people with real skills for the future.
