Review of School Governance in Victorian Government Schools
July 2005
In March 2005, Minister Allan commissioned the Review of School Governance in Victorian Government Schools to engage school communities, stakeholders groups and the wider community in a consultation on current and potential governance arrangements for government schools.
The Review of School Governance was held concurrently with the Review of Education and Training Legislation and sought to:
- examine the current role and functions of government school councils,
- consolidate, modernise and clarify school council functions and powers in legislation, and
- propose improved governance principles and support mechanisms for school councils.
The review involved significant consultation with school communities, stakeholder groups and others interested in school education in Victoria. An analysis of over 130 written responses to the discussion paper received from various groups, and other consultations, led to the development of twenty-two recommendations, including legislative changes to be incorporated into the new Education and Training Reform Act 2006, and improved administrative processes, support and training for school councils.
Minister Allan approved publication and dissemination of the following reports:
- Report on the Review of School governance in Victorian government Schools – July 2005 (PDF - 739Kb) - This publication addresses the consultation process, key findings and recommendations and will be published on the DE&T website.
- Response to the Review of School Governance in Victorian Schools (PDF - 382Kb). This publication is a summary of the report and includes priority action areas.
