Maternal and Child Health Services Expansion Promotes Healthier Mothers and Babies
The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in quality Maternal and Child Health services to support families and give children the very best start in life.
With Victoria in the midst of a baby boom, the Government is committed to providing better access to the services that matter to Victorian families.
These initiatives include:
$42.7 Million Boost to Maternal and Child Health Services
Every mother and their baby will continue to receive 10 free visits to their local Maternal and Child Health centre, as well as access to new parent groups and extra support if needed.
Each year, more than 70,000 Victorian mothers and their newborns will benefit from the visits, with expert nurses providing advice and support on a range of parenting, child health, and education and development issues. Nurses can also ensure potential health and developmental problems are detected early.
This investment also ensures the costs of the universal Maternal and Child Health service will continue to be shared by the State and local governments.
$12.2 Million Increase for Intensive Maternal and Child Health Services
An additional 1132 families annually will receive intensive support through their local Maternal and Child Health Service.
The enhanced Maternal and Child Health service provides vital support to parents who are disadvantaged, socially isolated or have babies with significant health problems and need extra assistance.
Parents can spend more time getting advice and support from trained nurses through home visits or their local Maternal and Child Health centre.
