Wolfram Software

About the Department's licence

In June 2016, the Department of Education and Training entered into a three-year agreement for the provision of a proprietary suite of Wolfram products across all Victorian secondary schools. This includes all government schools, Catholic schools and independent schools. The licence covers school devices, teacher devices and student Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD).

The software

The Wolfram suite of products is internationally recognized as powerful learning tools across STEM.  It has applications in the areas of computation, problem modeling, coding and more. It also enables the creation of resources and assessment. The suite includes  the highly regarded Wolfram Mathematica,  Wolfram Alpha Pro, SystemModeler, Mathematica Online and Wolfram Programming Lab. See: Wolfram software videos

Access and data security

Each user must create a login called a Wolfram ID, to access the software. This ID activates the software and is also used for administration and evaluation purposes.

Personal information used for Wolfram logins is minimal. Students and teachers provide first and last names, a school email address and an anticipated graduation date. Use of a school based email is best practice, so students aren’t contactable once they leave the school.

To access the licenses for Victorian Schools an email address ending in vic.edu.au or education.vic.gov.au is required.  If you do not have this in your school email address, contact the Digital Learning team for assistance via email: digital.learning@edumail.vic.gov.au

The Wolfram suite of software is provided by a contracted service provider to the Department. This software has been assessed using the Department’s Privacy Impact Assessment Process. For more information about the Department's handling of personal information, see: Privacy

Mathematica

Mathematica is a general-purpose mathematical software with a broad range of functionality include graphical, geometric (2-D and 3-D), numerical, symbolic, financial and statistics. It enables visualization and computation collaboratively. Students can source banks of real life data and turn complex mathematical language into everyday talk.

Mathematica prepares students with tools that are Industry standard.  It is widely used in universities across the world and by the top Fortune 50 companies.

Mathematica is provided via a licensed download or image.  Mathematica Online is also available.  Both versions are available for schools, teachers and students.

Access for DET Schools

  • DET Schools will be able to access the image of the latest version of Mathematica from the eduStar catalogue under mathematics software.  Go to: eduSTAR catalogue
  • it will also be available on the latest Department Secondary software image or as an installation from your specialist Technician. The Activation Key will be embedded in the image.
  • to download to a teacher's personal computer, login with a Wolfam ID and fill in the Teacher home-use licence form
  • to download to a student's personal computer, login with a Wolfam ID and fill in the Student home-use licence form
  • to access Mathematica Online - fill in: Request access form. Go to: Mathematica Online and sign in.

Access for Catholic and Independent Schools

SystemModeler

Wolfram SystemModeler (WSM) is a complete physical modeling and simulation  tool which uses drag and drop functionality to create sophisticated systems. High fidelity models can be built using pre-defined components.  Numerical experiments can then be performed on models to explore system behaviour.

SystemModeler uses components across multiple physical domains such as mechanical, electrical or thermal.  These multi domain models support a broad range of STEM.

SystemModeler is provided via a licensed download or image.  Access to this software is available to install in schools and on teacher and student-owned computers.

Access for DET Schools

  • DET Schools will be able to access the image of the latest version of SystemModeler from the eduStar catalogue under mathematics software.  Go to: eduSTAR catalogue
  • it will also be available on the latest Department Secondary software image or as an installation from your specialist Technician.  The Activation Key will be embedded in the image
  • to download to a teacher's personal computer, login with a Wolfam ID and fill in the Teacher home-use licence form
  • to download to a student's personal computer, login with a Wolfam ID and fill in the Student home-use licence form

Access for Catholic and Independent Schools

  • for school-owned machines - fill in the Activation Key request form
    • click the "Product Summary page" link to access your license
    • click "Get Downloads" and select "Download" next to your platform
    • run the installer on your machine, and enter Activation Key at prompt
  • to download to a teacher's personal computer, login with a Wolfam ID and fill in the Teacher home-use licence form
  • to download to a student's personal computer, login with a Wolfam ID and fill in the Student home-use licence form
