Addressing Australia’s Recycling Crisis
Gippsland Tech School
Event details
Description
Invite only for students and industry.
The issue: the Australian recycling industry was thrown into turmoil in late 2017 with the news that China would no longer be accepting “foreign garbage” for processing.
The Chinese ban, which will be fully implemented in early 2018, is likely to affect the processing and recycling of more than 619,000 tonnes of materials — worth $523 million — in Australia alone.
The potential flow-on effects have seen more than 20 local councils cease recycling services, thereby sending recyclable materials to land-fill creating future environmental challenges for our communities.
The challenge: Working with local industry and Grade 9 and 10 students from wider Gippsland, we will challenge groups to develop a range of innovative ideas to address this crisis and provide opportunities for improved processes in this critical sector.
