The Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into the extent, benefits and potential of music education in Victorian schools identified that exposure to music education results in improved academic grades, literacy results and attendance for students.
The Government is providing $2 million over four years to deliver on our commitment to provide quality music education programs to every Victorian school.
This initiative will bring music programs to 1,600 Victorian schools by 2018, so that no child misses out.
The Music in Schools initiative will build on existing music initiatives in schools through:
- $1.4 million to establish quality music programs in all government primary schools in partnership with Musical Futures Australia by providing professional learning to enable them to teach music with greater confidence
- $200,000 for pre-service primary teacher training in music education delivered by Musical Futures Australia
- $400,000 for government, Catholic and independent primary schools with students from low socio-economic backgrounds to purchase musical instruments to commence or strengthen their music programs, with grants administered by the Department.
The initiatives form part of the government’s Education State reforms, which are ensuring that all students have access to a great education.
