What is the whole school approach to Respectful Relationships?

In order to implement a whole school approach to Respectful Relationships, all schools will:

  • establish a team to implement the Respectful Relationships initiative in their school

Schools will also develop and implement a whole school Respectful Relationships plan that includes:

  • actions to promote gender equality across the school community strategies to promote gender equality across the school workforce
  • delivery of respectful relationships as part of the Victorian Curriculum from 2017
  • release of staff for professional learning (whole school approach professional learning will be tailored for school leaders and for school staff, and will be complemented by professional learning to support teaching staff to deliver the new curriculum)
  • support for staff and the school community to build their understanding of Respectful Relationships and its role in preventing gender-based violence
  • strategies for engagement with community family violence support and response services.

What supports will be available?

Victorian primary, secondary and specialist schools across the government, Catholic and independent sectors will be supported to implement a whole school approach to Respectful Relationships through access to targeted funds, a dedicated workforce, professional learning and resources.

  • Respectful Relationships Project Leads in each of the state’s 17 local areas will support Leading Schools to fulfil their roles and will help in building the capacity of all schools to implement the initiative
  • Respectful Relationships Liaison Officers in each of the state’s 17 local areas will support schools to respond to family violence, providing advice about evidence based approaches and interventions, liaising with specialist services and embedding effective response and referral processes
  • The Respectful Relationships Unit in DET’s central office will work to ensure that state-wide supports and tools are available to enable all Victorian schools to successfully implement Respectful Relationships.

Leading Schools in 2017

All Victorian schools were invited to apply to participate in the Respectful Relationships Education in Schools initiative as Leading Schools.  Following the application process more than 120 primary, secondary and specialist schools from across the government, Catholic and independent sectors have been invited to participate as a Leading School from Term 1 2017.

The Leading Schools were selected based on their demonstrated commitment, readiness and capacity to implement a whole school approach to Respectful Relationships. Consideration was also given to an even geographical spread.

Leading Schools will each work with a cluster of Partner Schools to:

  • provide best practice advice on implementation strategies
  • lead communities of practice
  • model respect and equity across the education system.
