Choosing the right school
News bulletin: 29 June 2009
You can now search online for information about schools and other providers of education and training in Victoria.
The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) announced, on Friday 26 June, this new source of information for parents and students thinking about the best place to go for education and training.
Lynn Glover, Director of the VRQA, said the on-line search is user-friendly.
“For example, a parent looking for the most suitable school in their local area, need only type in their postcode to see a list of schools in their neighbourhood,” Ms Glover said.
“A click on a school’s name will show them a map, while further links will lead to information about the size of the school, the subjects offered, and the school’s student attendance, achievements and destinations – all in their annual report.”
The website will include information about education and training providers across all sectors, government, catholic and independent schools, as well as TAFE institutes and other providers of training and higher education. The information is drawn from the annual reports of each school and training provider.
The website gives you up-to-date information as it is constantly refreshed by the VRQA’s latest data. Each school on the register must meet a required set of standards on governance, enrolment, curriculum, student welfare, staffing and school infrastructure to be listed.
The register is an important part of the government’s commitment to taking a stronger systemic approach to school improvement – in this case by ensuring transparent reporting of school performance.
“It’s about providing parents and learners with access to information to help them make informed choices, whatever stage they are at in their education and training,” Ms Glover said.
The new website is a great place to start your search for a school. We also encourage parents to contact the schools directly for more information to help you make your final decision.
