Young recruits become roving reporters
News bulletin: 18 August 2009
Students interested in journalism have been given the opportunity to become roving reporters for the youthcentral website.
Providing information on jobs, careers, training and study for young people, youthcentral is recruiting aspiring journalists, aged 16-25, to be the creators of its web content.
Successful applicants will receive two days of training in Melbourne in the areas of research, writing and interview techniques.
Following this training, roving reporters will be asked to provide articles on a regular basis and will be paid for their stories. Reporters will also be provided with a mentor for guidance, support and advice on articles that they produce.
The initiative has been developed by youthcentral to help young people build their resumes and strengthen their skills in leadership and community engagement.
Participants will gain first-hand experience in the areas of government and freelance journalism and will develop skills in communication, research, multimedia and information technology.
As well as writing, reporters will have access to podcasting and video training workshops and will be given the opportunity to network in the industry and attend policy launches, expos and festivals.
The roving reporter experience provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to immerse themselves in the world of journalism and start their careers in a supportive and welcoming environment.
