Experience life in a refugee camp

News bulletin: 2 September 2009

Secondary students learn first-hand what it would be like to live as a refugee, when the Refugee Camp in Your City program returns for a second Australian tour in October 2009.

Refugee Camp in Your City recreates the basic living conditions experienced by many refugees, to help local people gain a better understanding of what life is like for those who have been forced to flee to safety from armed conflict.

Refugee Camp in Your City will be held in Melbourne at the Treasury Gardens from 3 to 11 October 2009. The camp provides an opportunity for secondary students to meet real field workers, discover what life is like in a refugee camp, and become more aware of the humanitarian work undertaken by the humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières.

There will be guided tours of housing and food distribution tents, a health clinic, vaccination and nutrition tents, and a landmine education area. Guided tours will take place every 15 minutes from 9am to 5pm and last approximately 45-60 minutes.

Refugee Camp in Your City is a travelling program created by Médecins Sans Frontières, an independent, humanitarian organisation delivering emergency medical aid to over 60 countries around the world.
