Teacher supply and demand initiatives

To assist schools in their 2010 recruitment drive, 50 Maths and Science Graduate Scholarship and 30 Career Change Program places have been announced.

Through attracting graduates and working professionals to the field of teaching, these new incentives will help schools recruit and retain teaching staff in hard to fill places.  

The Maths and Science Graduate Scholarship will provide $5000 scholarships for math and science graduates who commence an approved graduate entry teaching course in 2010.

Graduates that go on to find fixed-term employment of 12 months in a government school will receive a further $3000 scholarship incentive and will also be eligible to receive an additional $3000 if they remain in this position for three years.

The Career Change Program is another incentive that will enable applicants to undertake teacher education while working as a trainee teacher. The program targets industry professional who would make excellent teachers in the areas of mathematics, science or technology. Under the program, trainees will receive financial assistance of up to $14,000 to combine their teaching studies with supervised classroom duties.

Financial assistance for the 2010 trainee intake will vary according to the type and location of the school where the trainee is appointed.
