Victorian student takes gold in maths Olympiad
News bulletin: 31 July 2009
Brunswick secondary student, Andrew Elvey-Price, has won gold at the International Maths Olympiad (IMO) 2009.
The IMO is a world championship mathematics competition for high school students.
Held this year in Germany, the program required high school competitors to solve six complex mathematical problems over the course of two days.
Australia’s six-member team won two gold medals and placed 23rd out of 104 countries in the competition. China and Japan took out first and second place. Australia’s other winner was Sampson Wong, 16, of James Ruse Agricultural High School in Sydney.
Winning a silver medal at last year’s competition in Spain, Andrew’s gold is testament to his hard work and natural mathematical ability.
Andrew’s school, Brunswick Secondary College, is incredibly proud of its maths genius and have congratulated him on his win and praised him for his other achievements at school.
“We are proud of the contribution he makes to the school. He is into music, tennis, and is very easy-going, modest and helpful, and is highly regarded by friends and staff,” Principal Vivienne Tellefson said.
