Kindergarten Inclusion Support package
News bulletin: 28 September 2009
The Kindergarten Inclusion Support (KIS) package has been updated for 2009.
As part of the Sharing Our Journey process, the KIS package has been provided to help children with a severe disability successfully move from kindergarten to school.
Within the package, information is provided regarding protocol for kindergarten, child care centres, early intervention services and schools to effectively support children in this crucial stage of learning and development.
As part of the protocol for term four, support meetings are to be organised by kindergarten teachers to specifically focus on the development of a plan to support a child’s move from kindergarten to school.
Support meetings should be held in a location convenient to the parent. Early childhood practitioners, early childhood intervention service providers and a nominated school representative should also be present.
Through these meetings, parents can discuss the strengths, abilities and needs of their child when attending school. Practitioners and teachers are also given the opportunity to plan and implement specific support requirements to prepare for the child’s entry into primary school.
This process encourages collaboration and communication between all concerned and ensures that starting school for children with severe disabilities is a happy and positive experience.
