Housing scholarships offered to students in need

News bulletin: 29 June 2009

Housing Week Scholarships offer financial support to motivated students who are passionate about their studies and want to go onto higher education but lack the resources to achieve their best.

To assist students in their academic achievements and support their attendance at school Housing Week Scholarships are being offered by the Department of Human Services (DHS) and Kids Under Cover.

Seventy scholarships of $1,000 are on offer to eligible students and can be spent on items that will help them progress in their studies. Scholarship recipients will also receive online tutoring support for after school hours to assist them in areas such as essay writing, time-management and research skills.

To be eligible for a Housing Week Scholarship, applicants must be:

  • Australian citizens or permanent residents
  • under 20 years of age on 1 February 2010
  • in Year 11 or 12 at a Victorian government school or TAFE in 2010
  • living in social housing or at risk of homelessness and also receiving the Youth Allowance, Disability Allowance or Parenting Payment

To receive the scholarship, eligible students must also be nominated by their school or TAFE as having the potential to achieve a good attendance record and a successful outcome in Year 11, 12 or equivalent TAFE studies.

Applications close on Tuesday 4 August 2009 and all eligible students are encouraged to apply. Teachers can also nominate students who are eligible for this scholarship.
