Women Making a Difference
News bulletin: 2 April 2009
International Women’s Day celebrates women’s achievements and this year that included three women dedicated to education.
As part of International Women’s Day on 8 March, Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development and Minister for Women’s Affairs, Maxine Morand, inducted 20 women to the Victorian Honour role.
The roll honours women who have made a significant contribution to education, health services, the environment, social welfare, the arts, science and human rights. In 2009 three women were inducted for their contribution to education:
- Roslyn Beaton for ensuring equal opportunities through education
- the late Dr Shirley Sampson for revolutionising girls’ education
- Helen Jackson for a lifelong commitment to education.
“International Woman’s Day gives us the opportunity to focus on women in our community and across the world,” said Ms Morand. “The Honour Roll provides an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of those being honoured and to encourage other women to pursue their individual goals.”
Inductee Helen Jackson (pictured above) is Victoria’s longest-serving principal and has been at the helm of Pascoe Vale Girls Secondary College for more than 30 years.
After almost 60 years in education, Ms Jackson believes the key to teaching is recognising each student as an individual.
“I hate the notion of coming to a school as an institution,” said Ms Jackson. “It has to be a place of beauty, a joy forever. I hate it when I see the students all wanting to go the same way. I want their individuality to shine through because it’s that sense of individuality that really brings out their best.”
Flattered by acknowledgement of her extraordinary career Ms Jackson is proudest of the achievements of others.
“I suppose my proudest moment is to stand back and watch the growth of the school, its place in the community and the success of the students.”
