Free internet for Victorian government schools

News bulletin: 20 October 2009

All Victorian government schools will have their internet charges covered by the Victorian government in 2010, Minister for Education Bronwyn Pike has announced.

This comes as part of a $4.4 billion budget allocated to Victoria’s 1570 government schools in 2010.

Ms Pike said the new budget allocation built on improvements already made over the past few years and will save schools Victoria-wide an estimated $9.5 million annually.

‘The internet offers a world of learning opportunities and we want to ensure students are tech-savvy and develop the right skills they need for 21st century jobs’ Ms Pike said.

While expenses will be covered for internet usage, individual schools will still be expected to manage appropriate levels of internet use.
