New parenting resource for fathers

News bulletin: 4 September 2009

Fathers matter and a new publication designed just for them ensures their role is given the prominence it deserves.

Launching the Fathers Matter booklet ahead of Father’s Day, Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Maxine Morand said fathers played a vital role in shaping their child’s development.

“Being a parent is one of the most important and rewarding life experiences and the role of fathers cannot be underestimated, particularly when it comes to a child’s social and emotional development.

“Appropriately, this Sunday is Fathers Day, which gives us the opportunity to focus on the role of fathers in their children’s life and how important their active involvement with their children is,” Ms Morand said.

The publication offers practical information for fathers on bonding with your children, everyday fatherhood, play activities and parenting after separation.

The booklet also includes links to further information and services for fathers.

“Parenthood can be a challenging experience, particularly for new fathers who may be anxious about their role and how to balance work and their family,” Ms Morand said.

The booklet was produced by the Parenting Research Centre (PRC).
