Students learn how to be energy safe
News bulletin: 3 August 2009
Energy Safety Week, running from Monday 3 August – Friday 7 August, encourages students and schools to engage in fun activities that promote the message of energy safety.
Last year over 100,000 pre-school and primary school students participated in the Energy Week program, Australia wide.
This year’s theme focuses on safety in the kitchen, an environment where many avoidable injuries occur. Potential hazards include gas leaks, faulty cords and appliances, exposure to hot ovens and open flames.
Throughout the week, participants, ranging from schools to council libraries and hospitals, will host a range of educational activities on how to stay safe and smart around energy, such as gas and electricity.
Schools that sign up for energy week are sent a toolkit providing: a list of interactive classroom activities, support materials and classroom giveaways.
All activities are designed for pre-school to primary school aged students.
Teachers are also encouraged to come up with their own creative and inclusive activities to engage students in energy safety education and to help them identify potential hazards when in the kitchen.
Energy safety activities that have successfully engaged students in previous years include:
- student plays using role-play to demonstrate safety knowledge
- school games to relay safety procedures
- safety brochures designed for class discussions
- safety drills around equipment, such as BBQ’s and pools.
