Preparing Schools for Bushfires

News bulletin: 12 October 2009

October 11 to 18 has been declared as Victoria’s Fire Action Week.

The week aims at preparing schools and communities for the upcoming bushfire season, commencing 28 October 2009.

Over the week, schools are encouraged to develop activities and engage students, parents, staff and their local communities on the importance of being bushfire ready.

For schools in high risk areas, resources are available to assist in the planning and implementation of safety measures and emergency procedures for the bushfire season.

Resources cover topics ranging from how to prepare for a bushfire to what to do during and after an event, including reopening a school and recovery from fire damage.

To assist schools, the CFA will also conduct fire-ready training throughout October on school premises identified as high risk.

Schools in high risk areas will be notified by their regional office to organise this training.

Following this training, schools will be encouraged to regularly practice these safety procedures, from fire drills to evacuations, with staff and students throughout the bushfire season.
