THE ARTISTIC achievements of last year’s VCE students will soon be celebrated in a vibrant exhibition on display at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).
Minister for Education Bronwyn Pike will next week open Top Arts which contains more than 2000 submissions from 57 government, Catholic and independent schools across Victoria.
“All of these works are a great example of the talent that is being nurtured and developed in our senior secondary schools,” Ms Pike said.
“I congratulate not only the students, but the teachers, schools and parents who have inspired and supported them to achieve such high standards.”
Now in its 14th year, Top Arts is part of the VCE Season of Excellence, a four-month visual and performing arts festival celebrating the talent and creativity of VCE students and managed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
The exhibition builds links between the school curriculum, tertiary studies and the creative industries by allowing students who have completed Art or Studio Art as part of their VCE to combine their classroom knowledge with practical industry experience by working under the guidance of curators, designers and technical staff.
This year’s exhibition features more than 60 works of art encompassing painting, photo-graphy, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, digital imagery and animation.
Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite piece, with the top three winners rewarded with cash prizes for their school as part of the Goldman Sachs JBWere People’s Choice Award.
Last year, 238,853 people visited NGV during Top Arts – a daily average of 2986 people across 80 days. In addition, a total of 13,645 students and teachers viewed the exhibition as part of NGV’s education programs.
Top Arts will be on display at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square from Thursday March 27 until Monday June 9. Admission is free.
