Backstage biz gets spectacular

Glitz and glamour: The full-costume rehearsal for this year’s Victorian State Schools Spectacular was an eyeful of colour

STEP aside, Australian Idol contenders – students from across Victoria are preparing to take to the stage in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, a mass singing and dancing production bursting with glitz and talent.

Teachers, students and their families in Victorian government schools are being given the first opportunity to purchase tickets for this exciting event – to be held at the Vodafone Arena on September 6 and 7.

The theme for this year’s performance is Made in Australia, a colourful and vibrant celebration of all things Australia.

Mark Laguerre, creative director of the show, said the try-outs had been a great success with over 100 students coming from around the state to showcase their vocal abilities in the hopes of getting a main part.

“It is always exciting to see someone walk into a room not knowing what to expect and watch a real talent emerge,” Mr Laguerre said.

“When those moments happen you are not in an audition … but rather you have been invited to a concert and you sit back and enjoy it.”

The rehearsal schedule is already proving rigorous, with many students required to take part everything from to small mid-week sessions to complete company rehearsals, not to mention costume fittings with wardrobe coordinator, Isaac Lummins.

And with over five thousand outfits planned for the enormous cast, the costumes alone may be reason enough to attend!
