Education Week — May 21-27

Discover how students’ lives are being transformed through the power of education

From sports and dance activities, to yoga classes, healthy canteens, breakfast clubs, mentoring programs and kitchen gardens, Victoria’s schools are going all out to encourage the healthy development of their students.

This week our primary and secondary schools are showcasing the link between good health and a great education as the 73rd annual Education Week kicks off across Victoria the Education State.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Healthy Mind, Healthy Body’, recognising that being physically active is important to students’ health, wellbeing and success.

Schools getting physical

Among the hundreds of our schools to open their doors this week is Woolsthorpe Primary School.

The school, north of Warrnambool, is showcasing its kitchen garden program, with students cooking produce from the garden for parents and the local community.

Another is Aireys Inlet Primary School, on the state’s south coast. The Principal, a former aerobics teacher, will be donning dance gear and running a whole-of-school and community interactive performance called Let’s Get Physical.

A laughing group will be on offer at Dallas Brooks Community Primary School to boost students’ sense of wellbeing.

The Education State

As part of the Education State, the Victorian Government has set a comprehensive set of Education State targets to focus efforts on the range of factors that allow students to develop and achieve their best.

To support happy, healthy and resilient kids, a physical activity target has been set at increasing the proportion of kids doing physical activity five times a week by 20 per cent. See: Target: Happy, healthy and resilient kids
