Minister's Message

The 15th annual 2008 Victorian School Sports Awards was a celebration of the achievements of some of Victoria’s brightest sports stars.

The annual awards recognise the highest level of sporting excellence and highlight the exceptional talent and commitment flourishing in Victoria’s government schools.

This year, 44 awards were presented to primary and secondary students who have demonstrated sporting excellence in their chosen sport.

Students were recognised in 17 sports ranging from cricket and badminton, to athletics and swimming. Students with a disability who have shown exemplary determination and success in their sport were also recognised.

Since 1994, many award recipients have gone on to sporting fame, representing Australia at world championships, and at the Commonwealth and the Olympic Games. Others have joined the ranks of the AFL and other elite sporting clubs.

Olympic gold medallist Steve Hooker, AFL footballers Anthony Rocca, Josh Fraser and Dale Thomas, Australian Opals basketballer Jessica Bibby and Victorian Bushrangers cricketer Cameron White have all had their names on the prestigious Victorian School Sports Awards honour role.

But these awards are more than just a celebration of sporting excellence – they also support the Victorian Government’s ‘Go for your Life’ campaign – which encourages healthy eating and an active lifestyle for Victorian children and families.

Sport and physical education in our schools play a vital role in establishing the positive lifelong habit of participating in regular activity.

The health benefits of regular exercise are undeniable. Sport also teaches students important skills like discipline, persistence, teamwork, confidence and good sportsmanship.

There are many parents, teachers, coaches and volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help students achieve their sporting goals. Their enormous dedication and support deserve recognition, and today’s awards will acknowledge their vital role in nurturing our young sportspeople.

Congratulations to all award recipients.

The awards are a celebration of your tremendous passion and commitment and provides the community with a fine example of the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle. You are an inspiration to us all.
