Judging Criteria

Beginner and Advanced categories

The judging criteria is made of the following four components:

Beginner Category - demonstrated new actions taken to make rubbish free lunch an everyday feature of the school.

Advanced Category - demonstrated actions in schools that have already initiated rubbish free lunch actions that have led to sustained reductions in lunch rubbish.

Measurement

Levels 1 and 2
Levels 1 and 2 may provide alternative methods of evidence, for example images, drawings, or number facts to demonstrate change in rubbish from lunch. However, for the purposes of caparison across schools rubbish should also be measured by weight.  This could be done by placing the rubbish in buckets and weighing it after evidence has been collected and before disposing the rubbish correctly.

Level 3 and up
Measuring waste is vital from Level 3. Schools must provide data in the form of a change in weight in kilograms for rubbish as a result of the challenge. You can also provide a graph of the results showing change in the weight of rubbish collected.

TIP
When weighing rubbish remember to weigh the empty container first and deduct the weight of the container from the weight of each container load of rubbish.  A nine litre household bucket may be a good size to use in each classroom and will fit on a pair of bathroom scales.

Other forms of evidence
All levels are able to provide evidence of other events and actions associated with the day, including photos, interviews etc.

Schools Change

For example, demonstrate:

  • Newly developed or reviewed documentation relating to reducing waste, including a policy or system for managing waste.
  • Plans/drawings of what is going to be or has been done with notes of change as a result of implementing the plan.
  • Sample of student views/comments/reflections about the outcome of the Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge in relation to reducing waste and caring for the environment at their school.

Link to Community

For example, demonstrate:

  • Photos or interviews of any activity the students/school community/broader community were/are involved in.
  • Advertising/promotion ideas used in the community for the Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge, for example, newsletters, local paper, local radio, school website.
  • Interviews with community members involved in the activity.

Links with Victorian Essential Learning Standards Links

For example, provide:

  • Teacher explanation of links with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) used in the challenge activity. Use this chart (PDF)  to tick the dimension focus of the event. Some evidence of assessment of student learning could be included as support material.
  • Possible unit of work developed or Rubbish Free Lunch unit used with supporting evidence of student work.
