  • iPads for Learning – provides guidance and resources for the use of iPad in student learning and offers background information on the Department’s iPad Trail for schools.
  • Literacy and Numeracy - provides information about initiatives and resources to support ongoing improvement in the literacy and numeracy outcomes of all Victorian students.
  • Literacy and Numeracy 6-18 month Strategy : P–10 improvement schedule for school leaders provides principals and school leaders in primary and secondary schools with a foundation for a whole-school approach to literacy and numeracy improvement.
  • Families as Partners in Learning - a practical resource for early childhood services and schools to build and strengthen family partnerships. 
  • National Activities for National Literacy and Numeracy Week - provides information on National activities being run for NLNW 2011.
  • National Literacy and Numeracy Week NSW - a collection of literacy and numeracy audio/video files useful for teacher professional learning.
  • National Year of Reading 2012 - Australian libraries and library associations have got together to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading, linking together all the great things that are already happening around books, reading and literacy, and giving them an extra boost, with inspirational programs and events taking place across the country.
  • Ultranet - the online student-centred learning environment for Victorian Government schools. Supports high-quality learning and teaching and connects students, teachers and families.
  • Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat - The Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat coordinates literacy and numeracy policy and programs across the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and assists regional offices, networks and schools to improve student achievement in literacy and numeracy.

 

Literacy links

  • Australian Literacy Educators' Association - offers support and professional development for educators through conferences, workshops and seminars, journals, papers and publications. Further sites recommended by the Association can also be explored under categories that include; grammar, media, multi-purpose, poetry, reading, reference, spelling and writing.
  • Children's Book Council of Australia - recommends books and resources to help parents support their childrens' reading and has links to the websites of Australian authors.
  • Dorothea McKellar Poetry Awards - provides schools with the opportunity to participate in a national competition, inspiring students to write poetry and share a love of country.
  • English Continuum reading training videos - support teachers and school leaders in their understanding and use of the Continuum, to differentiate teaching by identifying what students are able to do, and planning for purposeful learning and teaching in reading.
  • English Continuum reading videos - support teachers to make consistent and accurate judgements of students’ progress in reading, against the reading domain of the English Victorian Essential Learning Standards. The videos depict student-teacher interactions, which highlight typical student behaviours that reflect the reading standards and progression points.
  • Indigenous Literacy Foundation Programs - projects identified by community members, including developing local children’s stories in community, recording local stories and/or developing local resources.
  • Interactive English Games and Activities – find interactive English games and activities for students to play.
  • International Reading Association - supports literacy professionals through a wide range of resources, advocacy efforts, volunteerism, and professional development activities.
  • Literacy Centre - interactive literacy activities for primary school students.
  • Literacy to Learn videos - Secondary teachers working in Northern Metropolitan region with Associate Professor John Munro have trialled and developed a series of literacy teaching procedures to support literacy learning in all learning domains. These videos depict teaching interactions to support students to get their knowledge of a topic ready for literacy activities and for learning.
  • MyRead - strategies for teaching reading in the upper primary and lower secondary years.
  • School Library Association - offers opportunities for teacher-librarians and library teams to build their role in engaging and developing lifelong learners.  The SLAV website provides information on professional development, resources and publications, fellowships and awards and special projects, including Readers Cup.
  • SEN Teacher - provides a selection of worksheets, handouts and teaching aids most of which can be customised to suit a range of learners.
  • State Library of Victoria - provides details of talks, workshops, films, guided tours and more, for audiences across all age groups. The site also provides information on specialised learning programs for students and adults run by the SLV.
  • Starfall - a free website that teachers can use to help preschool, kindergarten, and primary students to read.
  • Victorian Association for the Teaching of English - promotes the interests of English education and provides information on professional development, teaching resources, student programs and more.
  • Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge - a reading program for students from Prep to Year 10.
  • Young Australian Best Books Award – (YABBA) the children’s choice book award in Victoria.

 

Numeracy links

  • Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers - includes challenges and activities about number, space, geometry, measurement and statistics.  Teachers can access videos, readings and other links to support professional learning.
  • FUSE – a repository of resources for teachers on all learning categories including literacy and numeracy.
  • Mathpages - a senior maths resource covering many topics including algebra and statistics including animations.
  • Mathematical Association of Victoria - access an extensive range of professional learning opportunities for teachers of all year levels as well as student activities, publications and resources.
  • Mathletics - an educational website helping students to enjoy maths and improve their results.  Activities are available that cover kindergarten to Year 12 curriculum.
  • Reach for the Stars - a maths activity run during National Literacy and Numeracy week to get your students collecting, sharing and investigating data.
