A report on The Future of Schooling in Australia was released by the Premier of Victoria at a conference in Melbourne on Tuesday 25 September 2007.
Ministers for Education, senior officials from State and Territory education departments and the Catholic and Independent education sectors, and selected education stakeholders were invited to hear international speakers at this premier one-day event and to discuss the future of schooling in Australia.
International speakers included Professor Ben Levin (former Deputy Minister of Education, Ontario, Canada) and Jari Koivisto (Counsellor of Education, National Board of Education, Finland).
Speakers presented on a variety of themes, including the development of national curriculum standards for all students; delivering successful education reform; and the performance of schooling in Australia relative to other high-performing nations.
A high-level Steering Committee, Chaired by Professor Peter Dawkins, Secretary of the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, was established by the Council for the Australian Federation to oversee the report. Through broad national consultation, extensive feedback has been received on The Future of Schooling in Australia report.
