For Kindergartens
With the creation of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Education Week will – for the first time since its inception in 1944 – incorporate kindergarten programs.
This is an exciting development that provides the opportunity for kindergartens throughout Victoria to showcase their early learning programs and the positive experiences that children enrolled in kindergarten enjoy.
Ways in which your kindergarten might participate in Education Week include:
- Open Day – invite locals to come and visit your kindergarten and learn about your programs and what you have to offer
- When I Grow up, I Want to be a …- invite parents to speak about their careers. You might also like to invite local community workers such as firemen or police officers to come and chat with the children about what they do at work
- My Favourite Book Day – invite children to bring along their book and dress up as their favourite character
- Have a tree planting day to celebrate. Children can then look after their tree/ plant for the year
- Have a children's concert where children can perform for each other and families
- Art Exhibition – exhibit your childrens’ arts and crafts work at a local shopping centre, library or other venue
- Celebrate Education Week with a local school – organise a joint lunch or visit a school computer room, art class etc
- Special Friend’s Day – invite parents, grandparents or special friends to come along to a kindergarten session
- Celebrate the things we love – get your children to paint or paste their favourite things onto a big mural artwork for display at your centre or a local library
- Build a library/ book borrowing program – children are encouraged to donate a book from home to the kindergarten during Education Week for loaning with other children
- Information session for parents on the value of “learning through play” – what children learn through painting, making collages, sand and water play etc; (maybe even giving parents the chance to experiment with these “learning tools” themselves)
- Session for parents on how to promote an interest in reading in their children
